Protesters Refuse to Disband as U of T Seeks Court Injunction to Remove Encampment
The University of Toronto is seeking legal permission to have police remove protesters who are refusing to leave a pro-Palestinian encampment established on campus earlier this month.
Through a notice of motion filed in court, the university is aiming to end the demonstration, stating that the encampment is causing irreparable harm to the institution.
Among the relief requested, the university is looking for authorization for police to “arrest and remove persons, objects, and structures” that violate the terms of a court order.
Additionally, they want to prevent protesters from obstructing access to university property or setting up fences, tents, or other structures on campus.
Despite a Monday morning deadline set in a trespass notice last week, the protesters have indicated their readiness to confront the situation with their own legal team and have chosen not to vacate the site.
Similar encampments have appeared on university campuses across Canada in recent months, prompting several schools to contemplate or take legal action against the protesters.
