Governor Noem tells Newsmax: South Dakota Tribes not receiving federal protection
South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem expressed to Newsmax on Tuesday that Mexican cartels have established a “safe haven” in tribal territories in her state, leading to violence, human trafficking, and drug-related issues, with little she can do to address the situation.
Noem pointed out that the Biden administration is responsible for maintaining law and order on reservations, but their efforts are falling short.
Recently, the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe voted to prohibit Noem from entering its reservation, extending to all nine indigenous tribes in South Dakota, representing 20% of the state.
Noem shared, “The tribal leadership has taken this action while the communities are in desperate need of help. Residents reach out to me regularly, pleading for assistance against the prevalent issues like drugs, violence, and human trafficking. However, the federal government holds the responsibility for law and order in these areas.”
She added, “The federal government is failing these communities, and the tribal leadership is choosing to engage in political games. Instead of attacking me, the one offering to help despite not having jurisdiction, they should be working towards ensuring the safety of their people.”
