Wayne Rooney shares details of his intense round of golf with Donald Trump | UK News
Wayne Rooney has shared fascinating details about his golf game with Donald Trump after providing football lessons to the former president’s son.
The iconic Manchester United and England player revealed that this unusual pairing occurred during his time at DC United in Major League Soccer, where he played from 2018 to 2019 before becoming a manager.
Trump‘s son, Barron, was part of the club’s academy, and Rooney had previously visited the White House in 2018.
“[He’d] asked me to give his son football lessons, and [Barron] said, ‘Do you want to see my dad?'” Rooney recounted to Gary Neville‘s YouTube channel, The Overlap.
“He took me up into the Oval Office and then from there, his PA was just texting – ‘Do you want to play a few holes [of golf?]'”
The 38-year-old former striker described the golf game, which took place at Trump National Golf Club near DC in 2019, as a surreal experience.
“The craziest part was having [former New York mayor Rudy] Giuliani in the buggy behind us,” Rooney mentioned.
“Then there were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security. There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like, ‘What’s going on here?!'”
Former Manchester United masseur and Rooney’s friend, Rod Thornley, had previously shared some aspects of the incident.

Thornley revealed on the Under the Cosh podcast that both of them were “steaming” [drunk] that day – and the top goalscorer had failed to correct Trump’s recollection of a recent match where he had scored a hat-trick.
“‘This guy, this guy, he scored five goals for DC United’,” Thornley recalled Trump telling others in the group.
“And I’m looking at Wazza, going ‘go on, correct him’.”
Trump then turned to Rooney and asked him to confirm the account, saying: “Didn’t you, Wayne? Five goals, Wayne!” – to which Rooney replied: “Yeah, yeah, I did.”
“I’m like, ‘you lying b*****d, tell him the truth’,” Thornley said, laughing.
