Experts Say the CCP’s Multifaceted Aggression Heightens with New Taiwan Presidency

President Lai Ching-te conveyed Taiwan’s desire for Congress to continue passing legislation to enhance Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities.

After the swearing-in of Taiwan’s new President Lai Ching-te, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) escalated its military aggression towards Taiwan. Amid widespread protests in Taiwan against the parliament’s decision to expand its authority, accusations surfaced of CCP interference in Taiwanese politics.

Three days following President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration, China carried out a two-day military drill in Taiwan’s vicinity. Subsequently, on May 27, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul led a bipartisan delegation on a visit to Taiwan and met with the newly sworn-in president.

President Lai expressed Taiwan’s hope for the U.S. Congress to continue authorizing legislation to empower Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities and boost exchanges and cooperation between the U.S. and Taiwan. Mr. McCaul stressed the necessity for all democratic nations to unite against aggression and tyranny.

During this period, Taiwan witnessed the “Sunflower Movement 2.0,” protesting against the vague criminal offense of “contempt of parliament” proposed by the opposition parties Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP). Experts suggest CCP influence on the actions of these parties.

The Sunflower Movement refers to mass protests in 2014 in Taiwan against the KMT’s trade agreement plan with China, culminating in the occupation of Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan by protesters. Eventually, the KMT withdrew its trade deal proposal.

Tang Jingyuan, a China affairs specialist, shared with The Epoch Times his belief that the turmoil in Taiwan’s parliament stems from deep-seated CCP infiltration, generating internal and external pressure.
