New Poll Shows Conservatives and Bloc Québécois Tied in Quebec in May 2024

The Bloc Québécois and the Conservative Party are now tied in Quebec, the only province where the Tories are not leading in the polls, according to a recent survey conducted by Leger.

The latest poll on Canadian federal politics, released on May 28, reveals that in Quebec, 29 percent of respondents support the Conservatives, mirroring the 29 percent support for the Bloc, while 26 percent back the Liberals, and 8 percent favor the NDP.

Back in May 2023, the Liberal Party was leading in Quebec with 38 percent, compared to the Bloc’s 32 percent, the Conservatives’ 15 percent, and the NDP’s 9 percent.

The recent Leger poll, conducted between May 24 and 26, shows that nationally, the Conservative Party still leads over the governing Liberals. The Tories have the support of 42 percent of Canadians, while the Liberals have 23 percent, the NDP has 18 percent, and the Bloc Quebecois has 6 percent.

According to the poll, “Almost one-third of Canadians think Pierre Poilievre is the leader who would make the best Prime Minister among the federal party leaders (28 percent), ahead of Justin Trudeau (16 percent) and Jagmeet Singh (16 percent).”

Mr. Poilievre’s support declined by four points compared to the previous month, while Mr. Trudeau’s support remained unchanged.

66 percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the current government, while 27 percent were satisfied, and 7 percent either didn’t know or chose not to answer.

The poll also inquired about reasons why respondents believe Mr. Trudeau wishes to remain as Prime Minister and Liberal leader, despite diminishing support.

On this question, 47 percent of respondents said it was because he “likes being Prime Minister and doesn’t want to leave,” 23 percent mentioned more policies to implement, 18 percent indicated no suitable replacements, and 15 percent suggested he wants to compete against Mr. Poilievre in the next election.

When asked about the Quebec poll results on May 29, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault stated, “We’re a year away from elections. A lot can happen between now and then.”

He added, “I know that Conservatives are focusing on polls. We’re focusing on Canadians.”

Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet also disregarded the poll numbers, referencing an Abacus poll from the previous week, conducted between May 16 and 21, which showed that the Bloc had 38 percent support in Quebec, while the Liberals had 26 percent and the Conservatives had 21 percent in that province.

“One poll is not better than another one, so we [should] avoid creating stories to get more people watching a TV show when there is nothing else behind it,” he remarked.
