President Joe Biden has released a statement regarding his son, Hunter, whose trial for illegal gun possession is set to begin in Wilmington, Delaware on Monday.

In the statement, the president expressed his love and support for his son, attributing his behavior to his struggle with drug addiction, a challenge that many families can empathize with.

Biden’s statement, in part, read: “I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today. Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and his strength in recovery are sources of inspiration for us. Many families understand the impact of addiction.”

The statement continued: “As the President, I refrain from commenting on ongoing legal cases. However, as a father, I have endless love for my son, belief in his abilities, and admiration for his strength. Our family has faced challenges together, and Jill and I will continue to support Hunter and our family with love and care.”

Biden’s statement was shared on X by Katie Phang, the host of MSNBC’s Katie Phang Show.

One commenter expressed concern: “Katie, this is trial interference. By abstaining from comments or taking a stance, he may be influencing the jury.”

Another shared a personal perspective: “As a recovering addict for 37 years and a mother whose son has been sober for 6 years after a year in jail, I understand President Biden’s love for Hunter. It is disheartening to see how the GOP/MAGA has targeted Hunter. Addiction is a serious issue!”

Meanwhile, jury selection has commenced for Hunter’s trial, where he faces three felonies related to a 2018 firearm purchase during a period of drug addiction, as detailed in his memoir, reported by The Associated Press.

The charges against him include lying to a gun dealer, falsifying information on a firearms application by denying drug use, and possessing the gun illegally for 11 days, according to the AP.

Hunter has pleaded not guilty and contends that he is being unfairly targeted by the Justice Department.

The president’s allies are concerned about the toll the trial may take on Joe Biden, who has always prioritized his son’s well-being and sobriety, and now must witness the public scrutiny of past mistakes, the AP noted.

Joe Biden is protective of Hunter, having spent the weekend with him before the trial, biking and attending church together.

This trial comes shortly after former President Donald Trump, the presumed 2024 Republican nominee, was convicted of 34 felonies in New York City, as reported by the AP.

The AP added, “A jury found the former president guilty of a scheme to cover up a hush money payment to an adult film actress to protect his 2016 presidential campaign. While unrelated, the proximity of these two cases underscores the prominence of the criminal courtroom in the 2024 campaign.”

Additionally, Hunter Biden faces a separate trial in California in September for allegedly failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes.
