Speaker Johnson Praises Challenge to Justice Department

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., outlined a “three-pronged approach” on Tuesday to limit the power of the Justice Department following former President Donald Trump’s conviction on multiple felony charges last week.

Johnson stated on Tuesday his plans to utilize legislation, congressional oversight, and the appropriations process to address the Justice Department’s actions after Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records.

“All of these measures will be implemented vigorously because it is necessary to do so, given the high stakes and the diminishing public trust in our institutions,” Johnson said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. “This should concern every one of us, and I believe it does.”

He also accused Democrats of initiating the numerous legal charges against Trump in an effort to impede his potential reelection in response to recent poll numbers.

“They observe this unfolding and are so anxious to halt his progress that they are willing to manipulate the judicial system to achieve their goal,” Johnson remarked. “This represents a disturbing new level of desperation and danger.”

Furthermore, he stated, “They are gradually eroding public confidence in our justice system. It is crucial for the public to believe in the impartiality of justice and the existence of equal justice under the law in order to uphold a constitutional republic. This issue strikes at the very foundation of our nation’s identity. It goes beyond just President Trump; it encompasses the essence of our legal system. And as a result of this, there is a strong pushback.”
