Navy Veteran Endorsed by Trump Aims to Break Kaine’s Hold on Virginia
Political observers have already placed bets on Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., predicting the Democrat will easily win a third term as the junior senator of Virginia, a state that has not elected a Republican to the upper chamber since 2002.
However, Republicans competing for a chance to unseat the former vice presidential candidate believe they have an opportunity with President Joe Biden leading the ticket in November. Despite Biden winning Virginia by 10 percentage points in 2020, GOP primary candidates argue that the landscape has changed with rising food prices, illegal border crossings, and crime in American cities.
Republican candidate Hung Cao, a 25-year Navy veteran with combat experience, told The Associated Press, “The only person that was better off today than they were four years ago is an illegal alien.”
Cao, who has the most campaign funding and previous experience running for higher office, has garnered the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Trump believes Cao would address issues like inflation, border security, and the Second Amendment.
In a campaign video, Cao draws parallels between Vietnam’s communist regime during the Cold War and the current Biden Administration, emphasizing the need for change.
While Cao portrays Kaine as a “rubber stamp” for Biden, he aims to energize the GOP base and end Kaine’s long political career.
Despite the challenges, Cao’s Trump endorsement and fundraising efforts have positioned him as a strong contender in the primary race, standing out among the other candidates.
With political experts acknowledging the difficulty of a Republican victory in Virginia, the race remains an uphill battle for the GOP, given the state’s historical leaning towards Democrats and Kaine’s popularity among voters.
The upcoming primary features a diverse set of candidates, each with their own backgrounds and priorities, but all facing the common challenge of capturing moderate voters in a traditionally Democratic state.
