Trump is scheduled to address Christian group while Democrats focus on abortion as a political tool

Donald Trump is set to speak to a Christian group on Monday that advocates for the complete eradication of abortion. This event comes as the former president continues to make this a key issue in the upcoming presidential election.

Trump will address The Danbury Institute virtually, an organization that is meeting in Indianapolis alongside the annual Southern Baptist Convention meeting.

A spokesperson for the Trump campaign, Karoline Leavitt, stated, “President Trump supports the rights of states to make their own laws regarding abortion and supports exceptions for rape, incest, and cases where the life of the mother is at risk.”

The Danbury Institute, a coalition of churches, Christians, and organizations, is firm in its belief that abortion is a significant issue that must be completely eliminated.

Although Trump has claimed credit for appointing justices who have contributed to overturning Roe v. Wade, he has not advocated for a national ban on abortion and prefers to leave the decision to individual states.

The Southern Baptist Convention, which Trump will be addressing, has diverse views on abortion with some advocating for complete bans while others support more incremental measures. Polls show that a majority of Americans support some level of access to abortion.

Many Southern Baptists see Trump as the best alternative to policies they disagree with from the Democratic Party. They appreciate his commitment to protecting the value of life, even when it is not politically popular.

Trump’s address at The Danbury Institute comes on the same day as his pre-sentencing interview with New York probation officers.

Despite criticisms of Trump’s past behaviors, many evangelicals, including Southern Baptists, continue to support him as a candidate.

Trump has not endorsed a national abortion ban but has expressed willingness to negotiate a policy that includes exceptions for specific cases.

Democrats and President Joe Biden’s campaign have attempted to link Trump to conservative state-level bans on abortion, painting a stark contrast in the upcoming election.

Overall, the issue of abortion remains a significant point of contention in the presidential race, with Trump’s stance drawing both support and criticism.
