House Republicans Call for Investigations Following Trump’s Conviction

House Republicans are launching investigations into the Justice Department and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg following the conviction of former President Donald Trump on felony charges.

The House Rules Committee is set to vote this Tuesday on a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for not releasing the full transcript of President Joe Biden’s interviews with special counsel Robert Hur. The resolution is expected to go to a full vote by the entire lower chamber.

“If Merrick Garland continues to defy congressional subpoenas and withhold transparency and crucial information needed to uncover the truth, he will face consequences,” stated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., in a press release.

The House Judiciary Committee will also hold a hearing this week on Bragg’s office and the prosecution of Trump for falsifying business records related to payments to lawyer Michael Cohen. However, Bragg will not attend this hearing as he has requested a new date after July 11, Trump’s sentencing day.

“This office is committed to cooperation,” stated Leslie B. Dubeck, the general counsel for Bragg’s office. “We are willing to make the District Attorney available for testimony at a later date and will assess allowing an assistant district attorney to testify publicly on an ongoing prosecution.”

She further added, “We ask for the opportunity to work with Committee staff to schedule a new hearing date and understand the purpose of the hearing.”

A committee spokesperson informed The Hill that despite Bragg’s absence, the hearing will cover all aspects related to the case.
