Supreme Court Faces Mounting Case Backlog with Limited Time Available
The Supreme Court is in the final stretch of its current term, with nearly half of the cases still pending. These cases cover a wide range of issues, from guns to abortion to social media, and could have significant impacts on the law. Among the unresolved cases is a key decision on whether former President Donald Trump has immunity from criminal prosecution for election interference.
Out of the 61 cases heard this term, 29 are still awaiting a decision, with some expected to be announced soon.
Here are some of the major cases that are still pending:
Donald Trump is arguing that former presidents should be immune from prosecution for actions taken while in office. The Supreme Court has previously ruled on civil immunity but has not addressed criminal immunity for former presidents. The outcome of this case could have implications for Trump’s trial in Washington, D.C.
A former Pennsylvania police officer is challenging the validity of obstruction charges brought against Capitol rioters. This case will determine whether a law aimed at preventing tampering with investigation documents can be applied to the violent assault on the Capitol.
Abortion opponents are seeking to restrict access to medication abortions by challenging recent FDA changes that made it easier to obtain mifepristone. The outcome of this case will impact abortion access in states where it remains legal.
Other cases awaiting a decision include ones on gun regulation, homelessness, social media regulation, and more. The Supreme Court’s rulings on these cases could have far-reaching effects across the country.
