Starmer’s pledge to appoint Armed Forces Commissioner sparks concern among Tories who fear it will jeopardize UK’s safety

The party announced that the new independent commissioner will investigate issues such as sub-standard housing, faulty kit, and poor discharge support.

If Labour is elected, Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to introduce a new armed forces commissioner and lead a “government of service.”

The commissioner’s role will involve championing those who serve by addressing issues like sub-standard housing, faulty kit, and poor discharge support, according to the party.

Minister for Veterans, Johnny Mercer, emphasized that only the Conservatives have a plan for veterans and can ensure the UK’s future, cautioning that a vote for Labour would endanger everyone.

Ahead of Armed Forces Day, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, along with shadow defence secretary John Healey, will visit a veterans’ coffee morning in the south-east of England.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commended the commitment of the UK’s service men and women, pledging to secure Britain’s position on the global stage.

The independent commissioner will report directly to Parliament, with provisions in place to conduct visits and inspections at Ministry of Defence sites without prior approval from the defence secretary.

Sir Keir stated, “Labour deeply values our armed forces personnel, veterans, and their families for their contributions to our country.”

He added, “Our changed Labour Party will always support our forces and ensure their voices are heard at the highest level.”

Labour’s John Healey underscored the party’s commitment to safeguarding the armed forces, stating, “Our new independent armed forces commissioner will investigate and report on issues affecting those who serve daily.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sunak stressed the importance of increasing defence spending and outlined the Conservatives’ pledges to support veterans.

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer expressed gratitude to all armed forces personnel and their families on Armed Forces Day, highlighting the Conservatives’ commitment to supporting veterans.
