New Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, declares that the NHS is in a state of disrepair
Following Labour’s overwhelming election win, Wes Streeting has been appointed as the new health secretary and has delivered a sobering assessment of the state of the NHS.
The newly appointed Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, has declared that the National Health Service (NHS) is “broken,” emphasizing that “patients are being let down every day.”
Mr. Streeting, who assumed the role of health and social care secretary on Friday after previously serving in the shadow cabinet, expressed that the NHS is currently facing its most significant crisis and cannot be repaired overnight.
One of his initial challenges involves addressing an ongoing conflict with junior doctors who are currently on strike.
Reflecting on his battle with kidney cancer in 2021, Mr. Streeting stated, “The NHS saved my life when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Today, I aim to repay that debt by safeguarding our NHS.”
The NHS was established in the 1940s by a Labour government under Clement Attlee and has since been subject to political controversies due to substantial investments but mounting worries about patient care.
In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Streeting affirmed, “When we asserted during the election campaign that the NHS is facing its most significant crisis, we meant it.”
Streeting Emphasizes the Need to ‘Diagnose’ NHS’s Issues
Mr. Streeting, who narrowly retained his MP position for Ilford North in East London amidst a tough challenge from a pro-Palestinian independent, remarked, “Previous governments have avoided admitting these simple truths. However, to treat an illness, one must first identify it.”
He pledged, “This government will confront our country’s challenges candidly and address them effectively.”
Mr. Streeting stressed, “Effective immediately, this department’s policy is that the NHS is in disarray.”
He added, “This mirrors the experiences of patients who are not receiving adequate care and NHS staff who recognize that their best efforts are falling short.”

Streeting Acknowledges the Need to ‘Diagnose’ the NHS’s Problems
Mr. Streeting, who has recently been re-elected as the MP for Ilford North in East London, emphasized the importance of diagnosing the NHS’s challenges before offering solutions.
He stated, “This government will be transparent about our nation’s challenges and committed to addressing them.
He affirmed, “Starting today, our department’s policy is centered on the fact that the NHS is in crisis.”
“Patients are not receiving the care they deserve, and NHS staff recognize that despite their best efforts, the current situation is inadequate,” he reiterated.
Negotiations to end the strike by junior doctors in the NHS will recommence next week.
Junior doctors in training across the NHS went on a five-day strike starting from June 27, resulting in the postponement of 61,989 appointments, procedures, and operations, according to NHS England.
The strike marks the 11th instance of junior doctors striking in the past 20 months.
Mr. Streeting announced, “I have just had a conversation with the BMA junior doctors committee, and talks to resolve their industrial action will begin next week.”
Junior doctors in England assert that their pay has decreased by over a quarter in real terms over the last 15 years and are calling for a 35% wage increase.
BMA Advocates for a ‘Credible Offer’ to Junior Doctors
In a joint statement, BMA junior doctors committee co-chairs Dr. Robert Laurenson and Dr. Vivek Trivedi expressed, “We appreciate the opportunity to talk to the new Health Secretary Wes Streeting today, as he fulfills his commitment made during the election campaign to engage with the JDC and initiate negotiations to resolve the junior doctors’ dispute.”
“Our stance has always been clear: only a credible offer that is acceptable to our members will bring this dispute to an end, and we hope the new government will provide this promptly,” they appended.
A spokesperson from the Royal College of Nursing stated, “Ensuring a fair pay settlement for all is the initial step towards revitalizing health and care services, alongside substantial investment to enhance recruitment and retention.”
