Heatwave in Western Canada Expected to Extend into Saskatchewan and Manitoba
A scorching heat wave is sweeping through Western Canada, bringing record temperatures and wildfire threats to Saskatchewan on July 9.
According to Environment Canada meteorologist Jennifer Smith, a high-pressure ridge from Northern California moved into British Columbia over the weekend before making its way to the Northwest Territories and Alberta on July 8.
The heat is expected to reach Manitoba by July 10 and could touch the edge of northwestern Ontario before heading south into the United States once again.
Ms. Smith mentioned that they are monitoring conditions conducive to wildfires such as hot and dry weather, wind, and lightning without rain, which are already in the forecast for parts of B.C.
Meanwhile, a separate heat wave has caused temperatures to soar into the 30s in Atlantic Canada and parts of Ontario.
On the other hand, heavy rainfall is predicted in southern Ontario and Quebec as Environment Canada has issued special weather statements warning of possible downpours of 20 to 40 mm of rain per hour due to remnants of hurricane Beryl starting on the night of July 9 or July 10.

Health Canada’s Peter Berry emphasizes that heatstroke is a serious medical emergency that can result in long-term health issues or death. He advises people to stay informed about local forecasts and check on vulnerable individuals.
If someone shows signs of heatstroke such as loss of consciousness, confusion, high body temperature, or lack of sweating, Berry urges calling 911 or the local emergency number immediately. While waiting for paramedics, efforts should be made to cool the person with cold water and fan them.
