Is Trump Responsible for Changing the Rules of Engagement, Despite Nothing Justifying an Assassination Attempt? | US News

The initial queries naturally revolve around the incident itself – the individual responsible, their motives and methods. And the pressing question: how did this occur?

It’s truly hard to believe for anyone who has been to a Trump rally and seen the comprehensive security measures that separate the man from the crowd. The security personnel tasked with protecting Donald Trump, whether Secret Service or not, will face scrutiny for a lapse in their basic duties.

Allowing a former and potentially future president to be in the sights of a sniper puts them in a vulnerable position, and they will have to justify their actions that led to a fatality, even if not of the intended target.

In the aftermath of the shooting, a witness mentioned to the media his surprise that such an incident hadn’t occurred sooner. This sentiment is shared by many in a nation that experiences a lingering threat of political violence.

Only time will reveal if, and how, things will change.

In a statement, President Biden referred to “Donald” as he condemned the attack as “sick” and asserted that there is “no place for this type of violence in America”. Democrats temporarily halted anti-Trump campaign ads in response.

However, the benevolent tone didn’t align with a controversial post on social media by Republican House member Mike Collins shortly after the assassination attempt. He insinuated that the president had incited the shooting, citing a prior statement where Biden mentioned putting Trump in a “bullseye.”

The House member later deleted the post, suggesting a recognition that he had crossed a line, akin to the broader conversation around political violence. Perhaps it was simply an isolated incident by one politician, swiftly retracted.

In the aftermath of events in Pennsylvania, there were reminders from Trump opponents about how, in the past, he had joked about the brutal assault on the husband of former Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Similarly, his dismissive attitude towards a kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was not overlooked.

No one is justifying an assassination attempt, but the implication is clear that Donald Trump played a role in changing the dynamics of political discourse and fostering hostility in American politics.
