British people prefer a more ‘Starmerite’ approach to immigration, according to think tank

The poll released on Sunday suggests that British citizens lean towards a more Starmerite approach to immigration.

A recent survey conducted by British Future revealed that half of the participants would support the introduction of a new humanitarian visa for individuals with compelling asylum claims or ties to the UK.

This initiative could potentially facilitate the safe arrival of up to 40,000 such individuals annually. British Future, an independent and non-partisan think tank, proposed this idea as a means to address integration and immigration concerns.

The survey also highlighted that 62 percent of respondents are in favor of increased integration efforts for asylum seekers, particularly focusing on enhancing English language proficiency to achieve universal fluency by 2035.

Additionally, the survey indicated that half of the public would approve of a new humanitarian visa system to address the small boats issue, allowing a limited number of 40,000 individuals with strong asylum claims or UK connections to seek asylum in Britain safely, thus undermining the activities of human smugglers.

Furthermore, around 62 percent of respondents expressed support for an annual parliamentary debate on migration, akin to the Budget discourse.

Moreover, two-thirds of the participants believe that the government should process the applications of asylum seekers promptly to determine their refugee status.

The poll results also highlighted the contrast between the current government’s approach, exemplified by Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to discard the Rwanda asylum plan proposed by the previous Tory administration, in favor of establishing a Border Security Command to combat cross-Channel traffickers.

Director of British Future, Sunder Katwala, emphasized that the public favors a more Starmerite immigration strategy characterized by control, competence, and compassion, in contrast to the more agitated stance of Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK.

It is evident from the research that the public supports practical solutions to immigration challenges, including improving integration, enhancing transparency, and devising more effective responses to small boat arrivals.

The findings suggest that by addressing these issues, Starmer can garner public backing for a fairer and more efficient immigration policy.
