Starmer Directs Defence Review to Ready Britain for ‘Challenging Global Environment’
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has initiated a comprehensive review of Britain’s defense capabilities, with a projected outcome anticipated in early next year.
Lord Robertson of Port Ellen—a former NATO secretary general and defense secretary under former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair—has been tasked with leading the review, which aims to enhance the armed forces, nuclear capabilities, and cyber defenses of the UK in response to a perceived “more dangerous world.”
Sir Keir has committed to allocating 2.5 percent of Britain’s GDP to defense and looks to the review to outline a plan for achieving this over the next five years.
Expressing the need for a new approach to national defense, Sir Keir stated, “We live in a more dangerous and volatile world, and my government will address this challenge with a clear vision to safeguard the British people.”
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had previously raised concerns about Labour’s ability to protect Britain’s defenses, but Sir Keir is determined to fortify the armed forces and ensure responsible defense spending under his leadership.
Lord Robertson identified China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea as hostile powers working together, posing a significant threat that must be confronted effectively.
Assisting Lord Robertson in the review are Gen. Sir Richard Barrons and Fiona Hill, a British–American foreign affairs specialist who previously advised the Trump administration.
Defense Secretary John Healey will oversee the review process and keep Sir Keir and Chancellor Rachel Reeves informed of its progress.
The strategic defense review is a critical step towards strengthening Britain’s defenses and ensuring the country’s security in a challenging geopolitical landscape.
