What happens next after Biden’s withdrawal and how can he be replaced? | US News

Joe Biden has given in to pressure to step down as the Democratic presidential candidate – so what are the possibilities for his replacement and how might it be carried out?

In the modern era, a national US party has never attempted to compel an election candidate to resign.

Therefore, we are entering unfamiliar territory, with no clear roadmap on what steps the Democrats will need to take to identify a new presidential candidate.

The state primaries voting confirmed Mr. Biden as the selection for the November election.

The 81-year-old garnered almost all delegates and was supposed to be officially nominated as the candidate at the Democratic National Convention in late August.

Biden will now continue to serve as the president until a new leader takes over in January.

However, the Democrats will need to find a replacement in the next few weeks.

But how will his successor be decided?
