US allies lament Biden’s departure and fear return of Trump era as fight against authoritarian states takes center stage

Western leaders have praised Joe Biden for his efforts to strengthen democracies against authoritarian powers after he exited the US presidential race.

However, there may be concern behind closed doors about how his indecision on running for the White House again may have increased the likelihood of a Donald Trump victory and its impact on US foreign policy.

Meanwhile, America’s allies may feel relieved now that the scrutiny on 81-year-old Mr Biden and his ability to serve another term as leader of the US is over.

The drama surrounding US domestic politics had started overshadowing major world events, like the recent NATO summit in Washington where Mr Biden mistakenly introduced Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Vladimir Putin.

Foreign ministries now turn their attention to the next Democratic candidate, though it’s unlikely there will be a significant shift in US foreign policy regardless of who replaces Mr Biden.

This includes the current front-runner, Kamala Harris, the vice president.

Regarding Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, Harris supports arming the Ukrainian military to resist Russia’s invasion.

She has been a key figure in representing US foreign policy, including speaking at the Munich security conference.

In the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, Harris has urged for a ceasefire and expressed concern over civilian casualties, but the US under the Biden-Harris administration continues to provide military support to Israel.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, is scheduled to meet with Biden, a longstanding supporter of Israel, during his visit to Washington.

“This will be an opportunity to express gratitude for his support and to discuss future goals and collaboration between our countries,” Netanyahu said.

“It’s crucial for our enemies to know that America and Israel stand united,” he added.

Unlike Harris and other potential candidates, Mr Biden has a strong interest in foreign affairs and has built relationships with global leaders.

His depth of knowledge and commitment to the Western world order may be hard to match by his successor.

A key feature of Biden’s foreign policy has been to strengthen ties with US allies, particularly the NATO alliance, which were strained during the Trump administration.

“America is back” was a common phrase used by Mr Biden, emphasizing collaboration with Western allies against authoritarian states like China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

The focus now shifts to what a potential Trump presidency would mean for America’s relationships with its allies and adversaries, rather than who the Democrats choose as their presidential candidate post-Biden’s exit.

The recent confusion and uncertainty among Democrats could potentially signal preparations for a return to a Trump administration in the eyes of global capitals.
