Letters to the Editor: Kamala Harris Becomes the Democratic Queen

The Issue: Vice President Kamala Harris consolidates Democrat support with key endorsements.

Support for Vice President Kamala Harris has been growing among Democrats and key organizations, but it is important not to automatically declare her as the official nominee (“The ‘plot’ to pluck Joe,” July 24).

When the Democratic National Convention meets in Chicago, it should allow for an open convention where other potential candidates can also enter the race. This should not be treated as a coronation.

Harris should fully explain why she believes she is the most qualified candidate to receive the party’s nomination. Given her track record on issues such as the border crisis during her time as vice president, it is important for voters to know why they should support her.

The American people are being urged to support Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate for the 2024 election.

The quick decision by the Democratic machine, led by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is a disservice to the political system.

Kamala Harris is essentially the nominee and will be confirmed as such at the Democratic National Convention.

It is ironic that despite her low approval rating as VP under President Biden, she is now being portrayed as the savior of the Democratic Party.

For years, Mayor Adams has been seeking help from Washington to address the influx of migrants in New York City, with little success (“Mayor Adams endorses Kamala Harris hours after slamming her for border crisis,” July 22).

Yet, he now endorses Harris for president. Isn’t she the “border czar” responsible for the migrant situation in NYC?

With this endorsement, Adams seems more interested in pleasing national leaders than representing his constituents.

Having the mayor endorse the person responsible for securing the border is a betrayal to New Yorkers.

The Issue: Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich sentenced to 16 years in Russian prison.

It is disheartening that Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison and the Biden administration has taken no action (“16 yrs. For U.S. Journo,” July 20).

While President Biden is vacationing at his Delaware beach house after being removed as the Democratic nominee, the rest of us are left wondering about our safety and hoping to avoid the reach of Putin’s regime.

Our country appears directionless and lacking leadership.

During former President Donald Trump’s tenure, our adversaries were cautious not to provoke him, in contrast to Putin’s actions with Gershkovich.

Evan Gershkovich has been convicted of espionage and sentenced to 16 years in a Russian prison.

It seems like professional athletes have an easier time securing US assistance in situations like this.

This was evident with Brittney Griner.
