Olympic Village Mourns the Loss of Samoan Boxing Coach

Samoa’s national boxing coach has passed away due to a cardiac arrest at the Olympic village in Paris, as confirmed by officials and reports.

Lionel Fatu Elika sadly departed on the morning of July 26, as reported by Pauga Talalelei Pauga, the president of the Samoa National Olympic Committee (NOC).

“Lionel was a prominent boxing coach in Samoa and a strong advocate of the Olympic values,” stated Mr. Pauga, as conveyed by the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) on behalf of the Samoa NOC.

“Our hearts go out to Lionel’s family, his boxers, and friends. He will be dearly missed,” Mr. Pauga added.

Mr. Pauga and Samoa NOC Secretary General Maureen Tuimalealiifano held a meeting with the Samoan delegation for an update and team prayer before the Paris opening ceremony, according to the ONOC.

The International Boxing Association, the governing body for amateur boxing worldwide, released a statement expressing condolences.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lionel Elika Fatupaito, the national boxing coach of Samoa, who tragically passed away during Paris 2024,” stated the association.

“Lionel’s commitment and love for the sport have made a lasting impact on the boxing community. His legacy will endure to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with Team Samoa and all affected by this profound loss.”

The ONOC announced that the Samoa NOC will not be making any further comments regarding Mr. Elika’s passing and asks for privacy for his family and the Samoan athletes during this challenging time.

Reportedly, Mr. Elika succumbed to cardiac arrest and despite efforts from emergency services, he could not be revived.

Samoa, a nation in the Pacific Islands, has 24 athletes participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
