Top GOP Members Advocate Vigorously for Trump Cabinet Roles

Former President Donald Trump is prioritizing his campaign, while key Republicans are pushing hard to secure spots in his cabinet, according to sources close to the Republican presidential nominee.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, the final contenders in Trump’s search for a running mate, are both being considered for a significant role as his secretary of state, as reported by Axios on Tuesday.

There is a noticeable pattern of considering options that align with discussions with Trump insiders, with the favored individuals in his potential new administration being white men who are recognized for their populist views and loyalty, according to sources close to the former president.

Trump desires individuals in his administration whom he can trust to support him and enforce his policies, feeling that he was let down by some of his Cabinet officials and staff during his first term.

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, Trump’s running mate, is expected to play a significant role in planning Trump’s transition if he wins, although there will likely be an official chairperson appointed as well.

Alongside Rubio and Burgum, Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., Trump’s former ambassador to Japan, is also under consideration for the position of secretary of state.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who reportedly prefers to be named as secretary of defense, is also being considered for the secretary of state position. Trump reportedly appreciates Cotton, a former U.S. Army officer who is adept at “speaking Trump” in his interviews, according to sources cited by Axios.

Campaign co-manager Susie Wiles is purportedly interested in serving as Trump’s White House chief of staff, while advisers are also contemplating former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as an alternative, per sources from Axios.

Chris LaCivita, the co-manager of the Trump campaign, could also secure a position in the West Wing, potentially as a counselor or senior adviser, along with Stephen Miller, Trump’s longtime adviser.

Other contenders for various positions, as per sources, include:

Treasury secretary: Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, might remain on the list as Trump favors well-known figures. However, there have been conflicting statements regarding Dimon as a choice. In light of potential unpopularity with Trump’s base, Scott Bessent, a hedge-fund manager and ally of Vance, is being advocated by campaign advisers.

National security adviser: Ric Grenell, Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence, is reportedly being considered for the role.

Commerce secretary: The list includes former WWE executive Linda McMahon, Dallas entrepreneur Ray Washburne, and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.

Energy secretary: Being considered as a backup option for Burgum, with John Ratcliffe, Trump’s former director of national intelligence, also in the running for CIA director or other key national security positions.
