Simone Biles and Team USA Make History with Gold Medal in Women’s Gymnastics Final
The team referred to the Olympic Games in Paris as its “redemption tour” following their silver medal win in Tokyo.
Team USA clinched the gold in the women’s team final for gymnastics at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, displaying dominance and maintaining their lead throughout the competition.
The artistic gymnastics team secured the top spot on the podium with a score of 171.296, almost 6 points ahead of the second-place team.
Having won consecutive gold medals at the Summer Olympics in London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016, Team USA was determined to secure first place. The team aptly named the Paris Olympic Games their “redemption tour” after settling for silver in Tokyo.
Simone Biles now holds the title of the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic Games history with eight medals. She concluded the competition with a standing ovation from the audience and a score of 14.666 on the floor routine.
Biles, 27, impressed with a remarkable 14.9 score on the vault, visibly delighted with her performance as she beamed after a flawless landing. Despite a calf injury during warm-up for the floor exercise on July 28, the eight-time Olympic medalist competed with tape on her leg on July 30. Her beam score of 14.366 was amongst her highest scores of the night.
Biles and Jordan Chiles showcased their skills in all four events at the Bercy Arena in Paris.
Suni Lee, 21, participated in bars, beam, and floor events. While receiving a deduction during the uneven bars for touching the floor with her feet, Lee still managed to score 14.566 due to the difficulty level. She later scored 13.533 on the floor routine.
Jade Carey, 24, excelled on the vault, her sole event, earning a high 14.800 score. Carey disclosed that an illness contributed to her fall during the qualifying floor routine.
Chiles, 23, delivered a stunning performance on the floor routine, earning a score of 13.966. The emotional star nearly broke into tears at the end of her routine. Chiles trained alongside Biles, her best friend and teammate, known as the “dynamic duo.”
Throughout the competition, Team USA’s rivals faced mishaps, with Brazil and China experiencing falls on the balance beam.
Heading into the final, the United States held the top spot with a 5-point lead over second-place Italy. Each country had three gymnasts compete on every apparatus. Team USA was the favored team going into the team final.
American celebrities like Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, Nicole Kidman, and Spike Lee were seen in the crowd, enthusiastically cheering on Team USA during the women’s gymnastics team final.
Italy secured the silver medal with 165.494 points, while Brazil clinched the bronze with a score of 164.497.
