How difficult is it to keep a criminal imprisoned in New York City?

Despite allegedly committing seven assaults in a year, the progressive prosecutors at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office didn’t find it sufficient to keep Christian Marrero locked up. Marrero was arrested in June 2023 for assaulting two MTA employees and later punching a transit cop, resulting in his imprisonment at Rikers. However, he allegedly went on to assault four correction officers while awaiting trial.

Despite Marrero’s violent history, Bragg’s office still agreed to a plea deal on May 30, releasing him on the condition that he join a psychiatric treatment program for eight months. Marrero, however, skipped the treatment and went on a slashing spree, injuring three people in Long Island City on June 22.

He was brought back to court on July 1 and is currently in custody without bail—for now.

One must question what Bragg’s team anticipated in this situation.

A man with a long history of violent behavior should not have been released to potentially harm more individuals or be entrusted with his own mental health care.

Cities that function properly do not allow dangerous individuals to roam freely.

Similarly, Norman Nelson, a 49-year-old man with multiple prior arrests, randomly punched a French tourist in Midtown and attacked an elderly man just days later. Although he now faces assault and harassment charges, New York’s justice system raises doubts about the likelihood of him staying incarcerated.

These incidents highlight the dangers posed to residents and tourists by individuals with erratic behavior in the city.

Whether you are a local or visitor, the unpredictable presence of potential assailants puts everyone at risk.

Blame falls on the prosecutors, judges, and legislators who prioritize releasing offenders rather than ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens in New York.
