Albanese stands firm on security protocols amidst worries over Australia welcoming Gaza refugees

The federal opposition has questioned the government’s security measures during Question Time.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has challenged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Parliament on Australia’s response to Palestinians fleeing the Gaza conflict.

Dutton and his party members have raised concerns about national security implications of allowing those fleeing the war zone into Australia.

Albanese defended the government’s stance, stating that it aligns with the previous Liberal-National government’s policy when Dutton was the immigration minister.

Albanese highlighted ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess’s warning of an elevated terror threat due to growing extremism and emphasized the need for responsible language and actions to prevent violence.

ASIO Director-General stated that there is no evidence linking terrorist plots to Gaza and emphasized the lack of inspiration from terrorist leaders offshore for attacks onshore.

Albanese criticized Dutton’s remarks about not allowing refugees from Gaza into the country, warning that it could create division.

Other Liberal ministers questioned the government on whether visas have been granted to individuals from Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.
