Dutton Challenges Albanese in Visa Debate Over Palestinian Visitor Approvals

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton claimed that the Albanese government has issued nearly 3,000 visitor visas to individuals from the Gaza war zone, which he believes could pose a potential security threat.

This marks the second day in a row where the opposition has targeted the Albanese government regarding visas for Palestinians in Parliament.

In response, Albanese stated that there have been no changes to visa provisions under his government and that they are following the same procedures as the previous Coalition government.

Contrarily, Dutton disputed this, calling it false. He argued that Syrian refugees who were granted entry during his tenure underwent strict security checks at various visa processing points before coming to Australia.

These checks involved collecting and verifying biometric data against Australia’s security agencies and conducting interviews with Australian departmental officers to verify claims and identity.

“These measures have not been taken under the Albanese government’s policy changes to grant visitor visas, even to individuals who have shown sympathy for the Hamas terrorist organization,” Dutton stated, calling for the prime minister to address the House immediately to explain why he misrepresented the situation.

Albanese was not present to respond. The prime minister accused the opposition of engaging in divisive politics in response to concerns raised in Parliament the day before.

He also reiterated that the opposition should take into account the message from ASIO Director General Mike Burgess on Aug. 5.

In regards to Palestine, Burgess stated, “We do not believe that any of the terrorist plots we have investigated in the last year have originated from Gaza. Foreign terrorist leaders are not inspiring attacks domestically.”

Dutton asserted that there is a surge in antisemitism in Australia.

“Individuals in the Jewish community feel threatened, and ASIO’s Director General has raised valid concerns,” he claimed.

Despite defending his statement, he emphasized, “This is not targeted at people based on their religious beliefs or political views. It is about safeguarding our nation.”

Dutton was supported by Shadow Minister for Immigration Dan Tehan, who made similar allegations. Nevertheless, the accusatory tone of both members was met with objection by other members of Parliament.
