In 2023, Ontario Municipalities Witnessed 1,400 Homeless Encampments
Cities and towns in Ontario are urging the federal and provincial governments to provide assistance with an estimated 1,400 homeless encampments in various communities.
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) stated that these encampments have appeared in cities, small towns, and rural and northern Ontario. The report
“While municipalities did not create the homelessness crisis, they are being forced to manage it without the resources or tools to sufficiently respond.”
Additionally, a group of Ontario mayors has launched a campaign to prompt changes from the provincial government.

They expressed that individuals have been avoiding public spaces and downtown businesses due to safety and security concerns.
The website encourages residents to send letters to the Ontario premier and other members of the provincial government to demand change.
The group is calling for the provincial government to establish a ministry responsible for addressing the homeless encampment issue. They anticipate this ministry to receive funding and be capable of addressing all housing needs, mental health and addictions, and other related support systems.
They are requesting the development of an Ontario Action Plan by this ministry. Additionally, tools, resources, and funding are sought for municipalities to assist them in meeting the needs of those residing in encampments.
Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy assured that he will continue to collaborate with municipalities, including on homelessness.
