Indian Prime Minister Modi to Visit Ukraine After Accepting President Zelenskyy’s Invitation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month, will visit Ukraine later this week.

It will be his first trip to the country since Russia invaded in February 2022, following his Moscow meeting with Putin.

India’s foreign ministry also announced that Modi will visit Poland before traveling to Kyiv.

The Ukrainian army continues its incursion into Russia, capturing territory and Russian troops.

Modi’s visit to Ukraine will be the first by an Indian prime minister since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992.

Engagements in Kyiv will cover various aspects of bilateral ties, including trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian exchanges.

India’s refusal to join oil sanctions against Russia, its major trading partner, has raised concerns within the G7 group.

Modi reiterated the need for diplomacy during his meeting with Putin in September 2022 but has faced challenges in resolving the conflict.

The Biden administration has expressed concerns about India’s relationship with Russia in light of the ongoing war.

India’s focus on diplomacy and dialogue to achieve lasting peace has been emphasized by officials.

Modi’s visit to Kyiv could be seen as a step towards promoting peace in the region, positioning India as a credible interlocutor.

India has historically maintained strong ties with both Russia and the United States, seeking a balance in its foreign relations.

Overall, Modi’s upcoming visits to Ukraine and Poland underscore India’s commitment to diplomacy and global peace efforts.
