Scottish Space Port Launch Test Ends in Explosion of Rocket Engine
SaxaVord, on the island of Unst in the Shetland Islands, was established as the UK’s premier licensed vertical rocket site last year.
Unfortunately, a rocket engine has exploded at a spaceport in Scotland.
Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), a German-based aerospace start-up, plans to resume regular operations “as soon as possible” following a failed vessel test at the SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands.
The incident, which occurred on Monday at 9:42 p.m., resulted in the loss of the rocket stage due to an unexpected anomaly.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the mishap on the island of Unst, home to around 650 residents.
The unsuccessful nine-engine test was part of several trials conducted before RFA could proceed to a full launch.
Footage from the BBC captured a significant explosion at the site, sending flames and smoke into the sky.

The RFA spokesperson stated: “RFA conducted a hot fire of its first stage at SaxaVord Spaceport on Monday evening, resulting in an unforeseen anomaly that caused the stage loss. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
“The launch pad is secured, the situation is under control, and immediate risks have been mitigated.”
RFA is collaborating with the spaceport and authorities to investigate the incident and emphasizes their iterative development approach with a focus on real testing.
The company added, “Our aim is to resume regular operations promptly and will keep you informed through our channels. Your patience is greatly appreciated.”
A spokesperson for SaxaVord also commented, saying, “This was a test, and problems are meant to be identified and addressed before moving to the next phase. We will support RFA in understanding and learning from the causes as they prepare for the next steps.”
Last year, SaxaVord earned the distinction of being the UK’s inaugural licensed vertical rocket site, allowing for up to 30 satellite and payload launches into commercially valuable orbits.
The space market is projected to exceed a trillion dollars by 2030 as companies worldwide launch thousands of internet satellites into orbit.
