PHAC: Listeria Outbreak Connected to Plant-Based Milks Shows Signs of Slowing
The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that the Listeria outbreak associated with several plant-based milks appears to be slowing down, with no new cases reported in the past two weeks.
However, the director of outbreak management at the federal agency explains that they are not ready to declare the outbreak as over until early October due to Listeria’s 70-day incubation period and the delayed reporting of new cases.
April Hexemer confirms that the total number of cases reported on Aug. 12 remains at 20 confirmed illnesses in four provinces, including three deaths in Ontario.
The agency linked a Listeria case reported in August 2023 to a larger outbreak following multiple infections detected in Ontario last June.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a national recall of various Silk and Great Value plant-based milk products on July 8.
The source of the illness was traced back to a specific production line at a third-party beverage packaging facility in Pickering, Ont., used by plant-based milk manufacturer Danone Canada.
