Concerns of CCP Influence Halt Pacific Forum’s Planned Visit to New Caledonia

French Ambassador denies claims made by Pacific leaders that they were obstructed from a fact-finding mission to New Caledonia.

Leaders were forced to cancel their visit to New Caledonia before the Pacific Islands Forum meeting due to disagreements with the French government.

New Caledonia’s President Louis Mapou requested the delegation to assess the aftermath of violent protests following a controversial law change in Paris.

The law would have extended voting eligibility, sparking opposition from the Kanak population, leading to riots and protests resulting in casualties and destruction.

Forum chair, Cook Islands PM Mark Brown, announced the postponement of the mission to address concerns raised by the New Caledonia government regarding due process and protocol.

Secretary-General Baron Waqa cited a “misunderstanding” as the reason for the mission’s failure.

Despite initial approval from the French government, claims arose that restrictions were imposed on the investigation, a claim denied by the French ambassador to the Pacific.

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and emphasized the importance of calm dialogue and cooperation.

A report warns that New Caledonia achieving independence could strengthen the CCP’s influence in the region, posing a potential threat to regional security.

The report suggests precautions to counter Beijing’s influence to safeguard the interests of New Caledonia and the surrounding nations.
