After CFMEU Placed Into Administration, Tens of Thousands Rally

The federal attorney-general placed the CFMEU’s construction division into administration due to allegations of corruption and criminal gang links.

Workers across Australia protested the federal government’s decision to place the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union’s (CFMEU) construction division under administration, with thousands halting work and taking to the streets.

In Canberra, Zach Smith, the national secretary of the CFMEU’s local division, assured protestors that the union would remain strong and urged them to stand by their values and workmates.

Smith promised to prioritize members’ interests during the administration and rebuilding period, emphasizing the importance of a tough, principled union that fights for its members both at work and in society.

Protests took place across capital cities, with reports indicating that 15,000 individuals participated, including around 8,000 outside Melbourne’s Trades Hall.

Demonstrators carried signs supporting the CFMEU and caused parts of the CBD to come to a standstill, chanting, “When I say union, you say power.”

The CFMEU was placed under the administration of Victorian barrister Mark Irving KC starting from Aug. 23, following reports of corruption and criminal gang links within the union’s construction sector.

State Labor governments distanced themselves from the CFMEU in light of these allegations.

In Sydney, deposed CFMEU NSW state secretary Darren Greenfield, facing corruption allegations, criticized ACTU leader Sally McManus and accused her of betraying the CFMEU for the Labor Party.

Participants at the Canberra rally criticized the government for intervening in the CFMEU while neglecting its responsibilities in managing inflation, resolving the housing crisis, and addressing the cost of living.

As the protest wrapped up, union members also voiced support for Palestine, demanding its freedom.
