El primer ministro de España visita África Occidental en un intento de frenar las travesías de migrantes en el Atlántico.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is currently on a visit to Mauritania, with upcoming visits to Senegal and Gambia, as the number of illegal arrivals in the Spanish Canary Islands has reached 22,000 so far this year.

Sánchez has announced several agreements with Mauritania in an attempt to reduce the influx of migrants crossing from West Africa to the Canary Islands in search of European soil.

During his three-day tour of the region, Sánchez aims to strengthen bilateral relations with Mauritania, Senegal, and Gambia, as these countries are commonly used as starting points for migrant boats heading towards the Canaries.

Spain has seen a significant increase in arrivals by sea compared to last year, with over 22,000 people arriving since January.

In his discussions with Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, Sánchez mentioned expanding the circular migration program to allow immigrants to work temporarily in Spain, renewing cooperation between security forces to combat human smuggling, and emphasizing the need for immigrant workers in an aging society.

Amidst the challenges posed by the rising number of arrivals, Sánchez advocates for managing migration in a compassionate, safe, and organized manner to benefit both societies.

He also acknowledges Spain’s history of migration and recognizes the aspirations of those taking risks for a better life.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts by Spain and Mauritania to address migration issues and establish regular pathways for citizens.

Additionally, Spain is focusing on economic and cultural ties with Mauritania to foster investments and promote Spanish language and culture in the country.

Sánchez’s visit to Africa follows recent events at the border of Ceuta, where thousands attempted to cross into the Spanish enclave from Morocco, highlighting the complex challenges surrounding migration in the region.
