Minister of Transportation in Canada to Hold Meeting with Via Rail Following 10-Hour Passenger Stranding

Canada’s transport minister expressed his determination to address a recent train delay that stranded Via Rail passengers for approximately 10 hours in Quebec over the long weekend.

Pablo Rodriguez mentioned that he will be meeting with Via Rail leadership within the week.

“Passengers deserve better,” stated Rodriguez on Sunday on X.

Via Rail verified that passengers were stuck for 10 hours on Saturday due to a breakdown between Montreal and Quebec City after encountering two consecutive mechanical issues.

The company mentioned that there were no available buses in the region to provide alternative transportation.

At times, electricity, air conditioning, and washrooms were temporarily shut down to facilitate repairs and connection with another train, according to the company.

Nevertheless, the company assured that passengers were provided with beverages and snacks throughout the day, and a meal was served on board along with extra water in the evening.

Ultimately, the fire department was called to assist in transferring passengers from one train to another, resulting in passengers arriving at their destination 10 hours behind schedule.

Via Rail also mentioned that they are looking into an incident where an employee confiscated a passenger’s phone during this time, and appropriate actions will be taken following a thorough review.

“We are dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service and ensuring that all passengers are treated with courtesy and respect,” stated the company in a Sunday statement.

They expressed their deepest apologies for the inconvenience caused to passengers and confirmed that a full refund will be provided to those affected.
