Quebec Fugitive Apprehended in Hungary Over Three Months After Escaping
Quebec provincial police report that one of the province’s top 10 most wanted criminals has been apprehended after escaping from a minimum security federal detention center back in May.
The police confirm that Yacine Zouaoui, 32 years old, was captured in Budapest, Hungary on Tuesday and extradition procedures are being initiated to return him to Canada.
Zouaoui, serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder and assault causing bodily injury, was discovered missing from the facility located north of Montreal on the evening of May 23.
He had been convicted for the fatal stabbing of a 43-year-old man in Burnaby, B.C. in 2011.
Quebec provincial police collaborated with the RCMP, Correctional Service Canada, Interpol, and other partners to successfully arrest Zouaoui.
Correctional Service Canada is conducting an investigation into the escape along with the provincial police.
