Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will attend the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony on Tuesday honoring the 13 service members who were killed in the botched Afghanistan withdrawal.

The ceremony will be hosted by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and the Gold Star family members of those killed in the attack at the Kabul airport will be in attendance as well.

As the ceremony is set to take place, Republicans will look to call out the Biden administration’s role in the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal that ended in a suicide bomber outside the Kabul airport killing 13 U.S. service members and leaving several others behind as the Taliban regained control of the country.

On Monday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee released a report on the Afghanistan withdrawal that accused President Biden of continuously ignoring repeated warnings because he “prioritized politics and his personal legacy over America’s national security interests.”

“Our investigation reveals the Biden-Harris administration had the information and opportunity to take necessary steps to plan for the inevitable collapse of the Afghan government, so we could safely evacuate U.S. personnel, American citizens, green card holders, and our brave Afghan allies,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said in a statement. “At each step of the way, however, the administration picked optics over security.”

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery with family members of the 13 service members in August.

Vice President Kamala Harris said the visit was seen as just politics, but Gold Star family members defended the 45th president in videos released after the cemetery visit. The family members also criticized Harris in a recent Trump campaign ad, claiming that he has shown attention to their families.

“President Trump has called,” one of the family members says during the advertisement. “President Trump shows up.”
