Lady Gaga’s New Record is Inspired by Harley Quinn: Singer Reflects on Character at Joker Sequel Premiere | Entertainment & Arts Updates

Lady Gaga has confessed to struggling to let go of her portrayal of the iconic comic book character Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker sequel.

During an interview with Sky News at the UK premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux, she admitted: “I don’t really know if I did because I’ve made a whole record about her.”

As audiences anticipate seeing the Oscar-winning actress as the “true love” of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, the Poker Face singer revealed that she will be releasing a 13-song companion album to the film.

“I believe the entire experience deeply inspired me,” Lady Gaga confessed.

“Getting to explore this character through music, script, dance, and collaboration was incredibly rewarding.”

Following the success of 2019’s Joker, which won two Oscars and grossed over $1 billion worldwide, director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix aimed to take a fresh approach in revisiting the complex dual personality of Arthur Fleck/Joker.

As the character finds himself in an institution awaiting trial, Phoenix had to incorporate singing and tap dancing into his portrayal of the character this time around.

“We would exchange tips constantly,” Gaga shared about Phoenix’s live singing on set.

“We were always bouncing ideas off each other… I truly enjoyed collaborating with Joaquin.”

“Every day on set was engaging and fulfilling,” Gaga added. “Despite the dark themes of Joker, we shared many laughs and strived for authenticity.”

Although Phoenix did not grant interviews on the red carpet, he previously praised Gaga for her lack of ego and strong commitment to the project, stating that she was always ready to fully immerse herself in the process.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month with mixed reviews, leaving the final verdict on the Joker’s cast and its critics to be determined.

Joker: Folie à Deux hits UK cinemas on 4 October.
