Possible Outcomes in the Middle East: All-Out War or Settlement under Biden Administration

The U.S. president mentioned that finding a resolution for one issue in the region could potentially lead to addressing other problems.

President Joe Biden emphasized on Sept. 25 that there is a potential for an “all-out war” in the Middle East, especially amidst escalating tensions between Israel and the Iran-supported Hezbollah terrorist organization.

During an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Biden highlighted the possibility of reaching a settlement between Israel and Hezbollah, stating that such an agreement could have a profound impact on the entire region.

Biden further stated that the Arab world is keen on achieving a settlement and they are open to forming alliances and agreements with Israel if certain policies are adjusted, although he did not specify which policies would need to change.

The president also emphasized the importance of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, another group backed by Iran, which would involve the release of hostages currently held in Gaza under Hamas control.

Additionally, Biden reiterated his support for a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

He highlighted that resolving one issue in the region could potentially lead to the resolution of others.

“I don’t want to exaggerate it, but a possibility, if we can deal with a ceasefire in Lebanon, that it can move into dealing with the West Bank, if we also have Gaza to deal with,” he mentioned.

Historically, Israel and Hezbollah have engaged in periodic conflicts, but tensions have recently escalated following explosions that occurred last week involving Hezbollah members in Lebanon, resulting in casualties.

Hezbollah has attributed the blasts to Israel’s intelligence agency, the Mossad, an accusation denied by Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed retaliation, calling the explosions a significant setback for the group.

Hezbollah launched a Qader 1 ballistic missile towards Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv on Sept. 25, which was intercepted by Israel. Following this, the IDF retaliated by targeting the origin site of the missile in southern Lebanon. Subsequently, there have been casualties among Hezbollah members and Lebanese civilians from the retaliatory strikes.

Israel Defense Forces head Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi stated that Israel will respond further in retaliation to what he described as Hezbollah’s first direct attack on Tel Aviv.

Since Oct. 8, 2023, Hezbollah has consistently launched attacks on northern Israel, resulting in casualties and evacuations of Israeli towns.

“Today, Hezbollah expanded its range of fire, and later today, they will receive a very strong response,” Halevi informed troops stationed at Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. “Prepare yourselves.”

Furthermore, Israel has considered the possibility of conducting a ground invasion into Lebanon.

The exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel coincide with Hezbollah’s pledge to support Hamas in fighting Israel following a mass attack on Israel by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023. This incident marked the largest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, with over 100 Israelis taken hostage and remaining in Gaza.

The Biden administration has been advocating for a ceasefire between the conflicting parties through intermediaries like Qatar, a supporter of Hamas. However, negotiations have not progressed, and no agreement is currently in sight as the anniversary of the massacre approaches.
