Ontario Education Minister Cautions Against Political Bias in Schools Prior to Hamas Attack Anniversary
Ontario’s education minister has issued a warning to the province’s school boards to keep “political biases” out of classrooms ahead of the anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel last October.
Minister Jill Dunlop issued a memo to boards with regard to Oct. 7, which marks one year since the terrorist attack against Israel, causing the deaths of 1,200 people and resulting in a military conflict in the region.
Dunlop emphasized the importance of maintaining safe, inclusive, and welcoming classrooms for all students and staff, especially amidst the increase in racism, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia in the province.
Schools were reminded to prioritize learning and refrain from using classrooms for political protests that promote discriminatory or hateful content.

The minister’s warning follows criticism faced by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) after videos showed students chanting pro-Palestinian slogans on a field trip meant to support the Grassy Narrows First Nation.
Ford emphasized that students should focus on academics rather than attending political rallies, accusing the school board of indoctrination.
TDSB clarified that the field trip was intended to be educational, focusing on indigenous perspectives on mercury poisoning in the Grassy Narrows community.
TDSB issued an apology to parents, stating that students should not be involved in protests during field trips.
Acting Director of Education Louise Sirisko expressed deep concern and promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
The statement highlighted the complexity of the investigation due to the involvement of multiple schools and individuals and ensured a diligent process.
If violations were found, TDSB pledged to take appropriate measures to address the issue.
