Conservatives Call for Investigation Into Mark Carney’s Appointment of Liberal Adviser
The Conservatives have requested an investigation by Canada’s lobbying commissioner to determine if it breaches ethics regulations for the prime minister to appoint Mark Carney as his personal adviser.
During the recent Liberal caucus retreat in Nanaimo, B.C., it was revealed that Carney, the former Bank of Canada governor, would be serving as chair of a task force on economic growth and as an adviser to the Liberal leader.
The announcement stated that Carney would assist in shaping the party’s policies for the upcoming election and would provide reports to Justin Trudeau and the Liberal platform committee.
The Tory ethics critic, Michael Barrett, expressed concerns in a letter to the lobbying commissioner that Carney is not registered to lobby federally, but his corporate roles could lead to potential conflicts of interest.
Carney currently chairs Brookfield Asset Management, which is in discussions with the government regarding a $50-billion investment fund supported by Ottawa and Canadian pensions.
When questioned in the House about Carney’s possible conflicts of interest, the finance minister has repeatedly accused the Conservatives of mudslinging and emphasized that the Liberals benefit from the advice of globally recognized experts.
