The Impasse Over Green Tech Fund Documents Continues as Liberals Refuse to Prorogue Parliament

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland assures that proroguing Parliament is not on the government’s agenda to resolve the impasse with the Tories concerning a matter of privilege.

During a news conference today, she unequivocally stated “no” when questioned about the Liberals considering proroguing, a move that would immediately adjourn the current session until the government initiates a new throne speech.

The current debate in Parliament spans an eighth consecutive sitting day, focusing on a Conservative motion requesting unredacted documents from the Liberals regarding misspending at a defunct green technology fund.

House Speaker Greg Fergus ruled on Sept. 26 that there is a privilege issue at hand, but the complexity arises because the motion insists on handing over the documents to the RCMP and suggests referring the matter to a parliamentary committee for further review.

In July, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme informed the House of Commons law clerk that the force may be unable to utilize the records as they were not obtained following the legal protocols required for criminal investigations.
