U.S. Prosecutors Plan Google Breakup
U.S. prosecutors announced on Oct. 8 that they are planning to break up Google’s search engine, following a ruling earlier this year that the tech giant was engaging in monopolistic practices.
In a significant decision on Aug. 5, a judge in Washington, D.C. found that Google had violated antitrust laws by using its financial resources to dominate the industry.
Google had made payments to various entities to ensure that its search engine was the default option, thus stifling competition.
On Oct. 8, the Department of Justice explored various options for addressing this issue, including potentially requiring Google to divest parts of its business such as its Chrome browser or Android operating system.
