Identification of Man Who Died in ‘Tragic Accident’ at Colorado Gold Mine Tourist Attraction Reported by US News
A guide named Patrick Weier, a 46-year-old father-of-one living in Victor, Colorado, died at a gold mine where he worked as a guide for the tourist attraction.
The circumstances surrounding Mr. Weier’s death have not been disclosed, but officials suspect it was due to a mechanical issue with the lift rather than a medical event.
Mr. Weier was one of 11 people in the lift at the time, with four sustaining minor injuries.
After the incident, a group of 12 tourists and a guide were trapped underground for six hours while another group was brought up to safety.
The accident occurred at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near Cripple Creek at around noon local time, with the lift malfunctioning at about 500 feet down the 1,000-ft deep shaft.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.
Initial reports suggested the lift may have experienced a drop, but further investigation is required to confirm what happened.
The mine had recently passed safety inspections according to Sheriff Jason Mikesell, with the lift being operated from a cab on the surface.
The mine, a popular tourist site for 50 years, is located about 110 miles south of Denver and offers underground tours showcasing veins of gold in the rock.
