Joly Warns Indian Diplomats of Consequences Following High Commissioner’s Expulsion
Canada is not ruling out the possibility of expelling more diplomats from India, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, who hinted at this on Friday in response to allegations of Indian diplomats in Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver being involved in state-sponsored violence against Canadian citizens.
Earlier in the week, Canada expelled the Indian high commissioner and five other diplomats. When asked at a news conference in Montreal if there would be more expulsions, Joly did not deny the possibility.
“They’re clearly on notice,” she stated.
The minister emphasized that Canada will not tolerate any foreign diplomats who jeopardize the lives of Canadians.
A year ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed clear evidence linking Indian agents to the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June 2023. These allegations suggest India’s efforts to suppress a movement for an independent Sikh state in India known as Khalistan.
Recently, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme disclosed that the national police force had initiated a special investigative unit last February to look into multiple cases of extortion, coercion, violence, and even murder, all linked to agents of the Indian government.

Canadian citizens have been warned about threats to their safety in over a dozen cases, prompting the national police force to speak out in an effort to disrupt what is perceived as a serious threat to public safety.
The six diplomats expelled are under scrutiny for their alleged involvement in cases where they used their positions to gather information on Canadians in the pro-Khalistan movement and passed it on to criminal groups who targeted the individuals directly.
India has denied the allegations and retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.
