Man arrested for scooping frozen yogurt by hand at cafe in British Columbia

Police in Richmond, B.C., have apprehended a man involved in a dine-and-dash incident captured on video where he used his hands to scoop frozen yogurt.

The event occurred on October 16 at Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt in Steveston, as witnessed by Katelyn Sieg, an employee at Pierside Deli nearby.

“On Thursday, when he was arrested for a separate offense, they informed us, ‘Don’t worry, he’s been taken into custody,'” she shared in a phone interview with The Epoch Times.

Sieg mentioned that the police advised them not to confront the man if he returned, but to contact law enforcement for his arrest.

The Epoch Times reached out to the local RCMP for comment but received no response at the time of publication.

Sieg recalled being in the deli when an employee from Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt came in to alert them that the man had returned. With two prior incidents at the store, employees were instructed to call the police if he showed up again.

“I said, ‘Let’s go to your store, close up, and wait here until your boss arrives,'” she explained.

Upon reaching the store, she found the man already behind the counter.

“I shouted ‘Hey’ loudly to get his attention, and he startled. He was already rummaging through their items behind the counter. He got scared, jumped up, reached for a cone, and accidentally crushed it,” she recounted.

Sieg then took out her camera to document the situation.

In the video shared with The Epoch Times, the man can be seen holding an ice cream cone, ignoring Sieg’s warnings to leave as police were on their way. Instead, he proceeds to scoop frozen yogurt with his hands. Despite Sieg’s repeated instructions to depart, he scoops more ice cream with his hands and places it on the cone.

He then grabs a bag and casually exits the store, bidding Sieg to “take care.”

“The most disturbing part for me was him scooping the ice cream with his bare hands,” she remarked.

This was not the first instance of trouble caused by the man at Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt, Sieg mentioned.

“About two and a half weeks ago, he came in claiming he lost his cell phone. He went behind the counter, but they told him to leave and he walked out,” she recalled.

During his second visit, he requested an ice cream and left without paying.

While Sieg had not encountered the man before, his behavior had been a topic of discussion among local businesses for the past year, including an incident where he took a remote from a nearby restaurant and returned it later.

“It’s likely he was not in the right state of mind,” Sieg suggested. “I wish him the best help possible. I just hope to not cross paths with him again.”
