US Announces THAAD Anti-Missile System Operational in Israel
The U.S. system enhances Israel’s advanced missile defense capabilities with more options.
The U.S. military has confirmed that its advanced anti-missile system is now operational in Israel.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated before his visit to Ukraine on Monday that the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system is deployed in Israel.
“We have the capability to activate it quickly and we are meeting our expectations,” he mentioned.
Hit-To-Kill
The Department of Defense announced on Oct. 13 that it will send the THAAD system and American support troops to Israel.
As per a recent Congress report, the THAAD system is an essential component of U.S. ballistic missile defense, using “hit-to-kill” technology to intercept and destroy threatening missiles.
It is effective against various ballistic missile threats, including those launched at Israel from Iran, intercepting them in their final phase of flight.
President Joe Biden stated that the deployment of THAAD, along with approximately 100 U.S. soldiers, will bolster Israel’s defense.
Israel is expected to retaliate against Iran following a recent ballistic missile attack, with President Biden expressing his understanding of Israel’s plans.
Secretary Austin emphasized that the decision of how to respond rests with Israel, aiming to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue between the parties involved.
Iron Dome
Israel’s multi-layered missile defense system, developed with U.S. assistance, includes the renowned Iron Dome.
Iron Dome specializes in intercepting short-range projectiles, having a success rate of over 90% against threats like Hamas rockets from Gaza and Hezbollah attacks from Lebanon.
Named after the biblical figure’s weapon, David’s Sling is designed to intercept medium-range missiles, with a range of up to 185 miles.
Missiles
David’s Sling, modeled with U.S. support, uses interceptors like the Stunner to take down incoming missiles.
Each interceptor is valued at least $1 million.
The Arrow system intercepts long-range ballistic missiles, such as those from Iran and Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Arrow 3, the latest version, has a range of 1,490 miles and can neutralize threats beyond its reach.
