Australia designates Hamas as an official terrorist organization.

The police are currently investigating after the word “Hamas” was spray-painted on infrastructure at various Sydney beaches, including Bondi.

The New South Wales (NSW) Police responded to reports of “offensive graffiti” found on the walls of structures in Bronte, Tamarama, and Bondi Beach.

An investigation into the incident has begun, and as inquiries progress, investigators have shared images of a man they believe could assist with the investigation,” police stated.

The individual is seen wearing a grey long sleeve shirt, black jeans, white/grey shoes, a grey beanie, and a blue face mask.

If anyone has CCTV or dashcam footage related to this incident, they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

The Australian government officially labels Hamas as a terrorist organization under division 102 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

Hamas carried out an assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the capture of 250 hostages, many of whom are either deceased or still in captivity.

‘Increase in Intimidation’: Jewish Community

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin emphasized the need for accountability for actions and their repercussions.

He highlighted that the graffiti was part of a growing trend of intimidation against the Jewish community.

“We call on authorities to investigate and stop this form of hatred,” he emphasized.

“We should not be subjected to expressions of support for a group that has just carried out a mass killing of our fellow community members and has vowed to target Jewish individuals worldwide.”

The Australian Jewish Association noted a recent surge in antisemitic vandalism on October 21 and highlighted a significant rise in antisemitism across Australia.

“It is time for the government to take a serious stance against antisemitism,” the association stated.

Meanwhile, the City of Sydney for Palestine and the Palestine Justice Movement Sydney are planning a demonstration outside Bayside Council on October 23 in support of a motion for a ceasefire and boycott-divestment sanctions.

“In November 2023, Bayside Council rejected a Ceasefire motion. With a new Council and a more united community, we can achieve success and encourage other communities to demand their Council cut ties with Israel,” the group announced.

“Councils should sever connections with Israel and any entities aiding in genocide. Taxpayers should not be complicit in Israel’s genocide.”
