Harvey Weinstein diagnosed with rare bone marrow cancer while undergoing treatment in prison | Entertainment and Arts Update
According to a report in the US, disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.
NBC News, Sky News’ US partner network, has stated that Weinstein, 72, is receiving treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia, a rare form of cancer affecting white blood cells, while in prison at Rikers Island in New York.
Weinstein’s representative Craig Rothfeld mentioned in a statement to NBC News that they would not provide any further comments to respect Weinstein’s privacy.
It has been disclosed by Weinstein’s representatives that he also suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid in his heart and lungs, as well as his recent health problems.
Weinstein awaits a retrial of his 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction, which was overturned by New York’s highest court in April, due to unfair trial practices. Despite the overturned conviction, he remains in prison due to another conviction last year for the rape of an actress in Los Angeles in 2013, which he is appealing against.
He is also facing two other criminal charges to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Weinstein, once a powerful figure in Hollywood, is known for co-founding Miramax and The Weinstein Company and for producing acclaimed films like Shakespeare In Love, Pulp Fiction, and The Crying Game.
