Former Pro Athletes Vying for Congressional Seats
Former athletes have long been involved in politics.
Politics is often likened to a sport, and this year is no different.
Three former professional athletes have entered the political arena to run for Congress in the Nov. 5 election.
One of them is Steve Garvey, the Republican nominee in California for the Senate, who is challenging Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). Polls indicate that Schiff, who has been a member of the House since 2001, is leading by a significant margin.
Garvey, aged 75, had a successful career as a baseball player, playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. He was a multiple-time All-Star, won the World Series, and received several accolades for his performance on the field.
Garvey has criticized Schiff for his long tenure as a career politician.
