Refunds for Flight Delays and Cancellations Now Automatically Issued
President Joe Biden announced this week that Americans will now receive automatic refunds if their flights are changed due to cancellations or significant delays.
A new rule from the Biden administration mandates that U.S. airlines must issue automatic refunds for canceled or altered flights.
President Biden expressed that this development is good news for passengers, especially with the upcoming busy holiday travel season.
According to a survey by online travel guide The Vacationer, nearly 46% of American adults lack confidence in airlines’ ability to avoid disruptions like cancellations and excessive delays during the holiday season.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) states that this new provision holds airlines accountable and protects consumers affected by flight changes not caused by themselves.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of passengers receiving refunds promptly without hassle, in accordance with the new rule.
Under the previous guidelines, airlines could set their own rules for refund eligibility. The new standard now defines specific circumstances in which passengers qualify for refunds.
Canceled or Significantly Changed Flights
If a flight is canceled or significantly altered, passengers are entitled to a refund.
Significant changes include extended departure or arrival times, changes in airports, increased connections, downgrades, or less accessible travel options for individuals with disabilities.
Significantly Delayed Baggage Return
Passengers can receive refunds if their checked baggage is not returned within specific timeframes after their flight arrives.
Extra Services Not Provided
Passengers deserve refunds if they paid for and did not receive additional services, such as Wi-Fi, seat selection, or inflight entertainment.
Airlines must also inform affected customers of their right to a refund, which must be automatic and cover the full ticket price, including taxes and fees.
Refunds will be issued in the original form of payment, such as cash, credit card, or airline miles, as outlined in the new rule.
